Kutta provides Next-Generation Radios to First Responders and Mine Operators

Kutta Radios, Inc. provides next-generation medium-frequency radios to First Responders and Mine Operators as a reliable, cost-effective solution to communication and tracking needs. Kutta radios use the metallic items found in the existing infrastructure of buildings, mines, and other enclosed environments to create communication paths that can extend for miles. These metallic items, such as cables, wires, and rails help propagate the Kutta radio signals and strengthen the overall transmission. This is in contrast to traditional radio signals which are diminished by the presence of metallic items and perform poorly in an enclosed environment. This innovative leap forward has resulted in a patent from the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office for a Medium-Frequency Omni-Directional Antenna, and has resulted in the founding of Kutta Radios, Inc., in Phoenix, AZ.

Originally funded by the U.S. Army - Small Business Innovative Research (SBIR) program, Kutta was tasked with developing a new radio device to meet the challenges of subterranean communications. Through multiple trade studies and several years of research and development, Kutta was able to create an innovative medium frequency radio capable of transmitting voice & data signals for several miles in underground environments. As the technology continued to evolve, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) expressed an interest in further developing the radio for use in underground coal mines. Working in partnership with NIOSH, Kutta was able to demonstrate successful communications using existing mine infrastructure, and together have made significant strides in enhancing worker safety in the coal mining industry.

Today, Kutta’s DRUM® Communication & Tracking System is Part 23 MSHA approved for underground coal mine operation, and has been successfully installed in coal multiple mines throughout the United States. In addition to this success, Kutta has also begun working with the Fire Department of New York (FDNY) - Research and Development Team to refine the technology further for utilization by First Responders in emergency situations. Multiple demonstrations have been made to First Responder teams in New York as of Jan 2012, and Kutta is optimistic for potential sales of the refined units in the same calendar year.
