Dennis Prather and EM Photonics - 2012 Tibbetts Award Nomination
Founded in 2001, EM Photonics is a privately-held, employee-owned corporation headquartered in Newark, Delaware with primary technical contributions in the fields of image processing, scientific computing, and optics. The company employs 20 people, consisting of mainly engineering and scientific staff. All technical staff hold advanced degrees in their field of specialization. Founders Dr. Dennis Prather (President) and Eric Kelmelis (CEO) have a demonstrated record of developing cutting-edge technology that they have been able to successfully transition into numerous commercial and national security applications. In particular, EM Photonics focuses on the following technology areas: Image Processing - Through commercial/DoD partnerships and SBIR support, EM Photonics has developed image processing algorithms, software, and field-deployable embedded systems. These systems have been transitioned to organizations such as Lockheed Martin, General Atomics Aeronautical, and groups at the Army, Navy, and Missile Defense Agency. Currently, these systems serve as a direct contribution to the warfighter, as they are presently deployed overseas and are used in persistent surveillance and ISR missions. To this end, they enable more efficient and successful military operations and are directly beneficial to limiting the loss of life. Scientific Computing - EM Photonics has contributed significantly to the field of scientific computing through the development of hardware and software tools that enable the acceleration of modeling and simulation algorithms. In particular, solvers for electromagnetic design and analysis, computational fluid dynamics modeling, and linear algebra libraries have been adopted by thousands of customers. The broad nature of these contributions is reflected in the vast array of their applications, ranging from aircraft landing on naval ships to financial analysis and forecasting. As an added benefit, by developing rapid advances in state-of-the-art-computing we are enabling more efficient power consumption and thus contributing to the emerging paradigm of green computing. Photonic Devices - EM Photonics has developed numerous tools, techniques, and designs for making novel photonic devices including waveguides, optical routing networks, photonic crystals, and true time delay modules for fields such as bio-sensing, optical radar, communications, and medical rehabilitation. In addition, our ability to fabricate and demonstrate nano-scale devices within functional systems has led to the development of new computing architectures and fiber distributions systems on military platforms.
Since its founding, EM Photonics has received SBIR awards from NASA, the National Institute of Health (NIH), the Department of Education (DOE), the National Science Foundation (NSF), and numerous Department of Defense (DoD) groups including the Navy, Air Force, Army, Missile Defense Agency, and DARPA. With these projects, EM Photonics has been able to transition early stage research all the way to the commercial sector in industries from surveillance to life sciences and autonomous systems to medical imaging.
