Invalid File Format? Submission Check?

The submission site refused to accept a PDF file, giving an error message of "Invalid File Format." It appeared to accept after the file was converted to a Zip file, but the "Submissions" window does not provide any obvious means to determine what, if any, file was uploaded. It may have accepted an earlier (partial) Word file, but that again cannot be verified.
